Girls and Boys Empowerment in Rural Chitipa

LISAP is implementing a 3 year GBERC project in Traditional Authority (TA) Mwabulambya in Njerengwa and Nkhangwa education zones in Chitipa district. The goal of the project is to protect girls and boys from harmful cultural practices that deny them their rights, including educational opportunities.
GBERC is made to contribute towards the Government of Malawi goal of improved access to quality and relevant education for all. The project supports this national goal through empowering and equipping communities in Njerengwa and Nkhangwa education zone in Chitipa District in Northern Malawi to protect 7,863 children (4089 girls and 3774 boys) from harmful cultural, social and economic practices that deny them their rights to education and put them at risk of poverty, HIV infection and other associated health risks.
Between 2015 and 2018, the project has reduced teenage pregnancies from 40 cases to 0 cases. The project has further reduced child marriages from 24 cases to 3 cases. 2763 learners (1123 girls 1640 boys) have received life skills and SRHR education. 139 villages have developed and are using community bylaws on child rights from 0 villages in 2015.
